All the Pretty Little Horses is a traditional American lulluby set in the Aeolian mode (natural minor). While no one knows the true origin of the song, American writer Dorothy Scarborough was first to record the following lyrics in her 1925 book:

Hush you bye, Don't you cry,
Go to sleep, little baby.
When you wake, you shall have,
All the pretty little horses.
Blacks and Bays, Dapples and Grays, All the pretty little horses.
Hush-a-by, Don't you cry, Go to sleep, my little baby.
