Program Notes
The blood moon is a special phenomenon in which, during a full eclipse, the
moon turns a blood red color. As the moon travels through the Earth's shadow, light from Earth's sunrises and sunsets around the disk of the planet are projected onto the moon. As light waves turn red as they are stretched out, the projected light on the moon is also red. The blood moon has another name: the hunter's moon. The hunter's moon occurs about a month after the harvest moon, and was said to illuminate the prey of hunters. Not every hunter's moon turns red, but one might imagine such an event, hunting game under the blood red moon.
